Birthday Dinner Surprise

A couple of Saturdays ago it was my birthday, and I was treated to a lovely day of theatre and cake.  The final surprise was dinner at Restaurant Mark Greenaway at No.12 Picardy Place.  I have wanted to go here for a while after reading many a review from other Edinburgh Foodies and the Cake Ladies, as well as seeing him compete on the Great British Menu.

We started off with a cocktail upstairs in the cocktail bar.  A Cosmopolitan for me, an Old-fashioned for him. A nice touch was on arrival in the restaurant I was greeted with a happy birthday after mentioning it on twitter (people do read my tweets after all!!!)

We started off the meal with an Amuse Bouche of Carrot Espuma with Star Anise, Pumpkin Seeds and Truffle Oil.  It was both light and earthy, and very tasty.

For starter Stuart and I went for different things.  I opted for the Pea Veloute, with Pea Ravioli, Pea Shoots, Crispy Pancetta, Truffle and Scottish Mushrooms.  The smell of the fresh peas hit me before the plate was set down in front of me, it was so tasty I could have bathed in it!!!

Stuart went for the Home Smoked Salmon Fillet with Quail Egg, ‘Tattie Scone’, Mushroom Puree, Pancetta, Home Made Black Pudding and Foie Gras. Which looked lovely and he confirmed it tasted so too!

Moving onto the main course I went for the Pan Roasted Scottish Hake Fillet with Lobster Tortellini, Fennel and Dill Puree, Pumpkin, Radish, Ginger and Spring Onion Broth and Purple Mash.  The fish was beautifully cooked, the Tortellini was delicious and the broth very tasty.  I previously have been a bit ‘freaked’ out by purple potatoes, but I just dived into the purple mash and it was lovely!

Stuart opted for the Honey Roasted Gressingham Duck Breast with Sausage Roll, Tarragon Croquette, Watermelon, Celeriac Puree, Roasted Salsify and Tarragon Jus.  This was ordered out of intrigue – would it really be a sausage roll? (yes it was a mini cocktail sausage roll!!) and also how would watermelon go with duck? Judging by the lack of sound from the other side of table it went extremely well!

Finally for dessert, it was a hard choice, but in the end I opted for the Manjari Chocolate Fondant with Vanilla Tuille, White Chocolate Mousse, Orange Caviar and Tonka Bean Ice Cream. I could have eaten all the desserts! It was chocolatey and delicious, with the orange caviar providing a nice sharpness against the rich chocolate.  I pretty much licked the plate clean!

As usual, Stuart went for the cheese board.  It came with 5 different Cheeses and Frozen Grapes, Apricots, Quince Jelly, Lavoch Crackers and Oatcakes. A tasty end to the meal.

The Sommelier kindly matched each of our courses with wine, rather than going for just a bottle of something, which was really good as we tried wines we either hadn’t had before or didn’t think of having with our food choices.  I did mention my dislike of Chardonnay, and the Sommelier has told me when I come back he will show me a good Chardonnay that will change my opinion – oh well if I have to back, then I must!!

We had a wonderful evening at Restaurant Mark Greenaway, the atmosphere was great, the service slick and the food delicious.  Definitely one we will be returning to!

My First Supper Club

Friday night finally arrived, the long wait was over.  Six months ago my friend Rebecca and I decided we had to go to a supper club, though naturally we didn’t do anything about it until about a month ago, when Charlie and Evelyn’s Table announced they were going to be back in the kitchen over the summer.  Where better to have our first supper club experience than in Edinburgh’s first supper club!

We secured our places at the first sitting in their new flat, emails were exchanged and finally we were there. Rachel greeted us with a warm welcome and showed us to the living room where our fellow diners where waiting, chatting away over wine.  Chris then came to welcome us and talk us through the menu for the evening, which sounded divine.  As we were all getting to know each other,  Rachel and Chris reappeared with canapés –  light and cheesy Stilton Gougeres and a delicious Seared tuna with radish and wasabi.

We then moved through to the dining room for the main event. For an amuse bouche we were treated to Pappa al pomodoro, a hearty tomato-bread soup, which was delicious, with a really lovely fresh tomato flavour

For starter we were served a Pea and mint risotto with Parmesan crisps.  I love peas, especially the smell of fresh peas! The course was fresh, light and tasty.  The parmesan crisp was lovely, and I could have eaten a whole bowl of those as well!

For main course, we had seabass with a chive crème fraiche, artichoke, green beans and new potatoes.  I am a fan of seabass, I like chunky white fish the most, so was pleased to see this on the menu! The chive crème fraiche was lovely with it, as were the vegetables and the potatoes. I  haven’t actually been an artichoke fan in the past, but this was really tasty, and I may actually eat it again in the future!

To finish up it was a Raspberry Tart, with lime and mint on top.  The pastry was sweet, which complimented the light cream and juicy raspberries perfectly!

I was full after all this, but managed to finish the meal off with a cup of tea and delicious chocolatey homemade truffle!

A wonderful evening was had, with great food and good company.  I will definitely be back at Charlie and Evelyn’s table, and would recommend to anyone to try to get a spot at one of their suppers!

Rolo Cupcakes

DSC_0379

Monday was not a good day at work, so I came home and whipped up a batch of Rolo cupcakes.  I had the need for something caramelly and chocolatey, and these did the trick.

Rolo Cupcakes

Ingredients

Cupcakes

175g Self raising Flour
175g Light Soft Brown Sugar
175g Margarine
3 Eggs
1 tsp. Baking Powder
4 tbsp. Cocoa Powder
3 tbsp. milk

16 Rolos

Frosting

225g Icing Sugar
100g Unsalted Butter
2tbsp Caramel Sauce (and a little extra for drizzling!)
1 tsp. milk
16 rolos

Method

  • Preheat the oven to 180c
  • Put all the ingredients (except for the Rolos!) in a bowl
  • Beat them together until light and fluffy
  • Line the muffin tins (I used cupcake cases for this)
  • Fill each case up to 1/3 full with the cake mixture
  • Drop a Rolo into the centre of each case
  • Top up with about another 1/3 of mixture
  • Bake in the oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until springy to touch
  • Cool on a wire rack
  • For the frosting beat together the icing sugar and the butter
  • Once a pale yellow colour and fluffy add in the caramel sauce.
  • The mixture may become a little thicker here, so add a little milk to loosen
  • Once smooth, its ready to pipe onto the cupcakes whichever way you fancy.
  • Top with another Rolo and drizzle with some caramel sauce

A Night at the Museum

This was no ordinary night at the museum, no stuffed animals or mummies coming alive, just 2000 people, a DJ, 2 bands, a silent disco…and a bar.  This was RBS Museum Lates.  The theme was ‘ A Night in Wonderland’, and what a wonderland it was too.  There were ‘beer gardens’, magic carpets, giant jenga, fantasy face painting and Alice in Wonderland Characters wandering around.

Music for the evening came from Fresh Air FM (DJ set), followed by two bands Discopolis and Django Django, both were great, and the crowd seemed to love them too!

It was weird being able to walk round the museum with a Glenmorangie Cocktail in your hand! Luckily, they didn’t let you in to the galleries with one in your hand!!  RBS Museum lates are taking a break for the summer.  I will definitely be looking out for the next one in the Autumn!
